How to Position Your Artwork Like a Pro

One of the biggest mistakes we see in home decoration is the placement of artwork in a space. Artwork placement can make or break the feel and flow of a room. Here are a few tips to consider when deciding where to hang your artwork.

‘Eye Level’ is not a good rule:

Eye level is different for everyone, nobody is the same height so ditch this out of date rule! Instead take into consideration the height of the ceiling and think of the wall in four vertical sections (top to bottom). Visualise the four sections and place your artwork in the third. Section one and two will be appear far too low and section 4 way to high!

Above Furniture:

When using artwork above furniture, think about a pyramid shape from the floor to the top of the artwork. The aim is to have the edges of the artwork be within the size of the furniture piece bellow it. In measurement terms, the artwork should take up 2/3 to 3/4 of the length of the furniture. Of course, in your home you can do whatever you like, these dimensions are just guidelines.

Filling an empty wall:

Have a full empty wall you would just like to fill? A great rule of thumb is to centre your artwork 57” to 60” off the ground. This does depend on the size of the artwork you have, but it’s a great place to start.

TIP: If you are struggling to visualise where to hang your artwork, mock it up! Use some old newspaper and tape a few sheets together to match the size of your artwork and stick it to your desired wall. This will help you visualise how high/low you want it to be. This is also a great tip to help you pick what size you need.
